Midland – Gilbert Donnelly Wood, known for his adventurous spirit and love for his family, peacefully passed away on August 28, 2025, at Manor Park. He was born on December 10, 1964, in Dallas, Texas, to Lee Files Wood and Sally White Wood.
Gilbert, or Gil as he was affectionately known, touched many lives through his work with the City of Midland Parks Dept and Frontier Airlines. A man of faith, he was a proud member of First Baptist Church in Midland and cherished for his vibrant personality.
An avid traveler, Gil explored various states and cities with his wife, Karen Stark Johnston, savoring the beauty of God’s creation. He proposed to Karen at a Boston pub, where a singer from Dublin serenaded them with a Gaelic song. A true romantic, he used family heirlooms for Karen’s engagement and wedding rings.
Gilbert’s family and friends will remember his love for adventure, his devotion to his loved ones, and his unwavering faith. He is survived by his wife, Karen Wood, daughter Alyssa Wood, other family members, and cherished friends. He was predeceased by loved ones, including his father, grandparents, and pets who brought him immense joy.
A memorial service to celebrate Gilbert’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the chapel at First Baptist Church in Midland. The family has expressed their gratitude for the care provided by medical professionals, Polo Park staff, Midland Memorial Hospital, Signature Care hospital, Manor Park Scharbauer Cottage, and Hospice of Midland.
Arrangements for Gilbert’s service are being handled by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences can be shared on their website. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to specified charities to support Alzheimer’s research.
