Midland, Texas – Michael Leon Smith, 69, a lifelong resident of Midland, passed away on September 4, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma. Born on May 23, 1956, to Cecil (Sonny) Smith and Melba (Pal) Smith, Michael was deeply rooted in his community and dedicated to his family.

Graduating from Midland High School in 1974, Michael later married Jane Ann Garner in 1982. He worked as a welder, in the oilfields, and for FedEx Freight until his medical retirement in 2016. Known for his love of volunteering with the Midland High School Band and enjoying outdoor activities like white-water rafting, fishing, and camping in Big Bend, Michael found the greatest joy in being “Grumpy” to his five grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his grandparents and immediate family members, Michael is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jane Ann, his children Elizabeth Ellerbe, Ryan (Kyra), and Ethan (Paul), and his beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, David Smith, and numerous extended family members.

Pallbearers at the service will include close friends and family members, with honorary pallbearers being Michael’s cherished grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Cotton Flat Baptist Church in Midland, Texas, on September 8, 2025, followed by funeral services officiated by Pastor Rick Holeman.

The family expresses gratitude to the medical team at UTSW in Dallas, Hospice of Midland, and their supportive friends at Cotton Flat Baptist Church during this difficult time. Memorial donations may be made to Cotton Flat Baptist Church Benevolence Fund or a charity of choice in honor of Michael Smith.
