McKinney responds to lawsuit, retires following primary loss in race for Midland County sheriff

Fate

A former candidate for Midland County sheriff responded on social media to a lawsuit against him before this month’s primary election.

Former Midland County Chief Deputy Rory McKinney took to Facebook to “categorically deny any wrongdoing” alleged in the suit claiming Midland County Sheriff's Office employees had been involved in illegal wiretapping and listening to another employee's phone calls.

Because the litigation is pending, McKinney said that he must following the advice of his legal counsel and refrain from addressing the allegations.

“I look forward to timely responding to the complaint and my day in court,” he said.

McKinney, along with Tom Hain and Joe Lozano, lost to David Criner for the seat that had been filled by the late Gary Painter for more than three decades. Painter appointed McKinney, also a 30-year sheriff's office veteran, to chief deputy in 2016.

Three days after the election, McKinney announced his retirement.
