Texas Tech University System issued the following announcement on April 2
Six Texas high school seniors have been awarded top-level Carr Academic Scholarships to attend Angelo State University this fall. The Carr Elite Merit Academic Scholarship and Carr Distinguished Academic Scholarship are ASU’s most prestigious scholarships for academic achievement.
Christian Bell, a senior at Greenwood High School in Midland, has been awarded the first-ever Carr Elite Merit Academic Scholarship worth up to $80,000. This scholarship was just introduced this year and provides the recipient $20,000 annually for up to four years. It is available only to students who meet the eligibility requirements for ASU’s Carr Distinguished Academic Scholarship and are also selected as a National Merit Finalist.
Bell plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in biology/biochemistry and a minor in psychology in preparation to attend medical school.
Five other high school seniors have each been awarded a Carr Distinguished Academic Scholarship worth up to $60,000.
- James Bautista, a senior at Brownwood High School, plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with minors in chemistry and accounting in preparation for medical school.
- William Hennig, a senior at Paint Rock High School, plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in physics to prepare for graduate studies in engineering.
- Emily Lee, a senior at Wakeland High School in Frisco, plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in preparation for medical school and a career as a pediatrician.
- Tressa Reading, a senior at Knippa High School, plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in preparation for medical school.
- Gracie Strange, a senior at Wall High School, plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology in preparation for future graduate studies and a career in forensic psychology.
Carr Academic Scholarships are renewable for four years and range in value from $1,000 to $20,000 per year. Scholarship awards are based on high school grade point average and standardized test scores on the ACT or SAT college entrance exams.
Fewer than 10 Carr Distinguished Academic Scholarships are awarded to new incoming students per year, providing each recipient with $15,000 annually. To be eligible, students must score at least 32 on the ACT or 1420 on the SAT; maintain a high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.5; and interview with a selection committee.
Carr Scholarships are funded by a $131 million endowment, one of the largest in the nation at a regional university. Robert G. Carr and his wife, Nona K. Carr, who bequeathed their interests in oil, gas and other minerals from producing properties in West Texas, made the Carr Foundation possible.
