Midland County residents receive larger refund checks from the IRS than do residents of any other Texas county.
Smart Asset said 58,390 residents received an average of $4,604 in refunds, the Midland Reporter-Telegram reported.
Midland was the only county of the top 10 for refunds that wasn’t either in the Rio Grande Valley, in South Texas, or along the Gulf Coast, the newspaper reported. The county’s refund average was enough to rank the county third in highest average refunds nationwide. The Texas refund average was $3,393.
Zapata and Chambers counties ranked second and third according to Smart Asset.
But not everybody in Midland County got a big check back. Another 14,890 residents had to pay the IRS an average of $16,171, putting the county fourth on the highest payments list, the Reporter-Telegram reported. Martin and Glasscock counties both have payment averages above $23,300.
Statewide, the average amount owed was $6,793.
