Texas Tech University System issued the following announcement on June 10

Angelo State University’s College of Graduate Studies and Research has announced the first winners of four new superlative awards that will annually honor top ASU graduate students in the areas of academics, research, leadership and community service.

Each of the winners is chosen from the field of Outstanding Graduate Students, who are nominated by the faculty of their respective academic departments. A separate committee of graduate advisors selects the recipients of the superlative awards. This year’s winners are:

Academic Excellence – Imelda Arzate of Denver City, Animal Science

Imelda has been accepted into multiple veterinary schools across the U.S. Additionally, she has completed multiple short courses outside of ASU. One of those courses was in Artificial Insemination (AI) of cattle, another in Bovine Ultrasonography hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and an Equine Reproductive Management course taught at Texas A&M University. Most recently, she has applied for a year-long internship in equine breeding at Colorado State University. Expectations for Imelda as a graduate assistant include assisting in lectures or laboratories. Her ability to teach well stems from her being personable, organized and engaging. Being detail oriented and reliable has landed her many important tasks at the ASU Ranch.

Research Excellence – Sydney Young of Austin, Physical Therapy

Being a tennis player, Sydney expressed a strong desire to study upper limb kinematics, shoulder position sense, and tennis racket positioning accuracy in tennis players. Because overhead athletes, such as tennis players, often experience shoulder injuries, results of her research project can further provide valuable information for clinicians and coaches. An ASU Graduate Research Fellowship recipient, Sydney presented her research results to the Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) of the American Physical Therapy Association in Washington, D.C. She then continued her research and presented it at the Texas Physical Therapy Annual Conference in The Woodlands. To be aware of the most current knowledge and direction of her profession, she maintains membership in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA), American Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy, American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy, and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).  

Leadership Excellence – Mark Wilson of Conroe, Guidance and Counseling

Mark has shown a positive impact on students in courses within the program. He provides such a positive perspective to students on discussion boards and in other ways. He was named the York Junior High School Teacher of the Year in 2008, 2010 and 2015. This year (2020) he was named the York Junior High School Humanitarian of the Year. He also serves on the campus administrative team, has supervised department teachers, advised new teachers, and delegated grade-level responsibilities. He also received a $10,000 Innovative Education Grant. He facilitates the incorporation of technology in classrooms, and is both Google Level 1 and Apple certified. Within his community, Mark has participated in such service as Wreaths Across America Houston, the Houston Food Bank, and Oak Ridge Woodlands Area Little League.

Community Service Excellence – Brett Lane of San Antonio, Global Security Studies

Brett has served as a graduate research assistant, an intern working with UAV’s (drones), and as the president of ASU’s chapter of the Order of the Sword and Shield national honor society. He was also a volunteer speaker at a prestigious symposium that brought top-level military officers and civilian experts to campus from Washington, D.C. He participated in a critical infrastructure vulnerability assessment with Tom Green County Emergency Communications, working with the Office of Emergency Management. He also volunteered for two political campaigns while performing all of that service and attending ASU as a full-time graduate student. His campaign duties included data analysis and research, constituent outreach coordination, and coordination of campaign events and volunteers. Brett is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and has traveled all over the world.
