Midland County commissioners met June 8 to discuss the Sheriff’s Office budget for the 2021 fiscal year amid a goal to slash the county's overall budget by 15%.

The Midland Reporter-Telegram reported the proposed budget for the MCSO was $24.4 million, much lower than this year's $24.8 million budget. This equates to a 1.6% budget cut, far less than the suggested 15%.

The MCSO is requesting funding for gas masks and riot gear in response to growing worries over the nationwide protests. Sheriff's officials say body armor, shields and gas masks will cost $22,000 and four grenade launches will cost $12,000.

The requested detention center budget for 2021 is higher than this year by $400,000. Sheriff's officials propose building maintenance and cell door replacement are focal points for next year's budget.

The COVID-19 outbreak and spring downturn in the oil industry are likely to have a significant impact on 2020 tax revenue. Decreasing property tax revenues and losses in revenue from postponed court hearings and trials will also impact how much tax revenue will accrue in 2021.
