As the Ector County Republican Party is accusing Gov. Greg Abbot of overusing his power during the COVID-19 pandemic and voted to censure the governor, State Sen. Charles Perry (R-Lubbock) wants lawmakers to have a voice in how Texas deals with the pandemic and called for a special session.
According to the Texas Tribune, the local Republican Party accuses the governor of five party principle violations. The letter "doesn't have any teeth," Aubrey Mayberry, a precinct chair, told the Texas Tribune, but she believes it is a strong message.
Perry is also concerned about Abbott's use of unilateral power that has "no end in sight."
"This is why I urge Gov. Abbott to convene a special session to allow the legislature to pass legislation and hold hearings regarding the COVID-19 response," Perry said on Facebook. "It should not be the sole responsibility of one person to manage all of the issues related to a disaster that has no end in sight."
