Midland College has introduced fast-track courses to prepare West Texans for health careers.
According to Midland College, the Health Sciences Continuing Education Department is offering courses that would place students on a path to careers as pharmacy technicians and optical assistants. Both training courses will be available online.
Students taking the pharmacy tech courses will have to attend some on-site lab training, which will be done at the Midland College Advanced Technology Center. Lab training will follow COVID-19 related health protocols for social distancing and sanitation. Face masks will be required.
“The COVID-19 pandemic and the decline in the energy industry has left many West Texans without jobs,” Kimberly Daw, Health Sciences Continuing Education adviser/coordinator, said. “These programs are designed to offer accelerated training so that students can begin health careers before the end of the calendar year.”
Pharmacy technician classes will run through Dec. 10. Students will be able to complete online coursework through November, and then will participate in lab training Nov. 30-Dec. 10.
Optical assistant courses run through Nov. 12 and will be conducted remotely via Zoom teleconferencing.
