Midland and Odessa schools have received $8.8 million in federal coronavirus relief resources, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said during a visit to George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa High School.

Cornyn saw how Odessa teachers, students and administrators used federal CARES Act funds to move from in-person to hybrid and remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to his website. He joined high school freshmen in a world geography class being taught with students both in-person and learning from home, helping teach the class and hearing from the students about their pandemic experience.

Cornyn visited Midland in early August to share how the CARES Act has helped the Permian Basin.

Ector County ISD received $5.46 million in funding. The funds enabled the purchase of 5,820 iPads for pre-K through second grade students and 6,000 Chromebooks for third- through 12th-grade students. Classrooms were configured with microphones to project teachers’ voices clearly through masks for remote learners at a cost of $1.1 million.
