WASHINGTON, DC - In a press conference held last night, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) joined Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) to demand immediate action from President Biden and Congress to fund the government and secure the southern border. Pfluger emphasized the urgent need for the border to be shut down in order to address the escalating crisis.
Pfluger highlighted the dire consequences of the current situation at the border, recounting a recent visit to Eagle Pass where he witnessed heartbreak and tragedy firsthand. He spoke of a woman who was brutally assaulted, kidnapped, and separated from her husband, suffering severe injuries. Pfluger placed the blame on President Biden, accusing his administration of allowing the cartels to gain operational control of the southern border and facilitating the smuggling and trafficking of over seven and a half million people in just two and a half years.
The Congressman also criticized President Biden for failing to prioritize national security by impeding the work of border patrol agents. He revealed that only 10% of agents are currently deployed in the field, leaving the country vulnerable to those attempting to evade capture. Pfluger drew attention to the tragic incident in July where 53 migrants perished in the back of a tractor-trailer south of San Antonio due to extreme heat. He argued that these devastating consequences were a direct result of the President's failed policies.
Highlighting the importance of border security, Pfluger emphasized the passage of a comprehensive and highly effective border security bill. He stressed that the bill needs to be sent to the Senate, urging President Biden to make a decision. Pfluger stated, "If he wants to keep the government open, he needs to shut down the border."
Pfluger's call for action resonated beyond the borders of Texas, as he noted that even Democratic colleagues from states like Massachusetts were feeling the pressure to address the border crisis. He invited the media to visit Texas and witness the chaos firsthand, urging them to meet with migrants and hear their stories. Pfluger emphasized that the current state of affairs at the border is entirely avoidable and advocated for the reinstatement of the Remain-in-Mexico policy and the implementation of consequences for those attempting to cross illegally.
In conclusion, Congressman August Pfluger made a strong case for shutting down the southern border, highlighting the urgent need to secure the country and protect its citizens from the devastating consequences of illegal immigration.
