WASHINGTON, DC — In an effort to address the escalating migrant crisis at the southern border, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) has introduced legislation to defund the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) newly-formed Homeland Intelligence Experts Group. The group, which includes former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John Brennan, has come under fire for their past actions and alleged partisan affiliations.
"Tens of thousands of migrants are flooding our southern border daily while the Biden Administration wastes its resources setting up an 'Experts Group' with the likes of James Clapper and John Brennan," stated Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX). He added, "These men abused their positions of power perpetuating the Russia Hoax and serving as partisan operatives for the Democrat Party. I'm proudly introducing legislation to defund this 'experts group' and ensure the Department of Homeland Security remains focused on its true mission—defending American citizens."
The Homeland Intelligence Experts Group was established to provide advice to DHS's Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A). However, concerns have been raised about the group's credibility and impartiality, particularly due to the involvement of Clapper and Brennan. In 2020, both Clapper and Brennan wrongly suggested that the New York Post's reporting on Hunter Biden's political influence peddling was the result of Russian disinformation.
To address these concerns, Congressman Pfluger and Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (TN-7) sent a letter conducting oversight of the Office of I&A's commitment to accurate intelligence sharing. They also demanded information regarding the establishment and selection process of the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group.
This legislation comes as part of ongoing efforts to secure the southern border and address the influx of migrants. The bill aims to redirect funding towards DHS's primary mission of protecting American citizens.
