There were five American Indian students enrolled in Big Spring ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 37.5% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Big Spring ISD schools welcomed 3,510 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.1% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Big Spring ISD roughly covers schools within Howard County and has a main office in Big Spring.

Among the eight schools in Big Spring ISD schools, Big Spring High School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of three students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
