Harriet graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. A devoted wife and mother, she found joy in assisting others and spent extensive time volunteering with organizations such as Foster Grandparent for MISD, Activity Director at Manor Park, and Assistant teacher at Midland Montessori School. Harriet's dedication extended to roles as a Girl Scout leader, PTA member, Docent at the Petroleum Museum, Children's Service League volunteer, and Pink Lady at Midland Memorial Hospital.
A steadfast believer, Harriet valued her faith immensely. As a longtime member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, she committed herself to serving on the Altar Guild. Her unwavering faith provided solace, knowing she would reunite with Jesus in eternity.
Harriet cultivated various hobbies she cherished, including Bridge, Canasta, gardening, line dancing with the Tall City Dancers, reading, and word puzzles. She dedicated over 30 years to yoga and aerobics at the YMCA, along with water aerobics at the COM. Even in her later years, she maintained an active lifestyle by riding her exercise bike. Her love for adventure fostered a deep interest in traveling worldwide.
With a profound love for animals, Harriet embraced numerous cats and dogs over the years, favoring Afghan Hounds, Poodles, and Scottish Terriers. Devoted to animal welfare, she rescued feral cats, affectionately named Charlie, Miss Kitty, Baby, and Little Girl.
Harriet's warm-hearted nature and charitable spirit endeared her to many, especially cherished friends Ruth Petigrew and Natalie Cutter Lake. Her social gatherings were marked by joyous celebrations and warm hospitality.
Harriet is survived by her children Betsy Ann Owens, Carol Louise Overton (David Overton), John Reid Barnes (Karen Barnes), five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Louise (Reid) Morris and Frederick Kendall Morris, and brother Frederick Kendall Morris Jr.
Known for her kindness and generosity, Harriet supported numerous charitable causes. A 56-year resident of Midland, she held a deep affection for Texas. In lieu of flowers, she requested donations to animal rescues.
A funeral service to honor Harriet's life will take place on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 10:00 AM at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, followed by a graveside committal at Resthaven Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers are John Barnes, David Overton, Abby Rawlins, Kyle Rawlins, Michael Johnson, and Blake Umsted.
The family extends their gratitude to Blake Umsted for his compassion and support over the past 31 years.
