Dr. Burks began his academic journey with a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Technological College, graduating Cum Laude, followed by a medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, and further specialized in Endocrinology with fellowships at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, and Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Dr. Burks dedicated 15 years to private practice in Dallas, Texas, before a distinguished 28-year career at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Odessa, Texas.
During his tenure at TTUHSC, Dr. Burks held various esteemed positions, impacting countless students with his teachings and mentorship. His commitment to excellence was recognized through numerous accolades, such as the Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Service Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, and induction into the Teaching Academy. Notable national recognition includes the ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award and membership in The Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Burks' impact was felt beyond the classroom, through his service in the US Public Health Service and contributions to the National Institute of Health.
In addition to professional accomplishments, Dr. Burks found joy in life's simple pleasures, accompanied by his loyal German Shepherd, Gunther. His love for family and passion for diverse activities including cooking, gardening, fishing, and photography brought him immense happiness.
He is survived by his beloved wife Mary Burks, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, brother, and an enduring legacy of hard work, compassion, and dedication to medicine. Dr. James K. Burks will be remembered for his unwavering commitment and legacy that continues to inspire. A Celebration of Life will honor his memory on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Ellis Funeral Home, with donations to the American Cancer Society welcomed in lieu of flowers, reflecting Dr. Burks' enduring care for others.
