Congressmen August Pfluger and Darren Soto have reintroduced a bipartisan bill aimed at improving the broadband deployment process. The Federal Broadband Deployment Tracking Act seeks to enhance transparency and efficiency, focusing on closing the digital divide for rural Americans.

The legislation mandates that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) present a detailed plan to Congress within 180 days. This plan will outline how the agency intends to manage broadband permitting applications on federal lands, which are crucial for building telecommunications infrastructure. The NTIA is also tasked with identifying potential barriers to implementing this plan swiftly.

Rep. Pfluger emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “It is time to close the digital divide and create a more connected future for all Americans, and my legislation is a critical step to accomplishing this goal.” He added that enhancing government accountability in broadband deployment would be an investment in the nation's future.

Rep. Soto echoed these sentiments, highlighting his support for making broadband more accessible, particularly in rural areas. “I’m proud to co-introduce the Federal Broadband Deployment Tracking Act alongside Rep. Pfluger,” he said. He noted that regions like Kenansville and Deer Park in Central Florida have benefited from federal funding aimed at underserved areas.

The bill addresses issues identified in a 2024 Government Accountability Office study which found that agencies like the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service often exceed deadlines for processing applications due to lengthy reviews and high fees. These delays result in service interruptions and increased costs for consumers.

Last year, Rep. Pfluger's act successfully passed through the U.S. House of Representatives.
