Etta Jean Young, Remembered for Warmth and Engaging Spirit

Etta Jean Young | Avalos-Sanchez & Thomas Funeral Home

Midland—Etta Jean Young, known affectionately as Jean or Big Mama Jean, was called home by God on February 5, 2025. Born on November 21, 1950, to Booker T. and Evelyn Young in Brady, Texas, she was a beloved member of the community with a warm and engaging spirit.

Educated at Booker T. Washington Elementary School and Carver High School, where she was a majorette, Etta graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, Texas. With an unwavering faith, she was a member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Etta was an active participant at the South Side Senior Citizens Activity Center, enjoying activities like chair exercises, crafts, bingo, and line dancing. Known for her love of "old school" music, she touched the lives of many with her engaging conversational skills and capacity to listen with empathy.

Etta is survived by her children La Saundria Young Clay, John Liggins, Damon Clay (Tammy), and Jermaine Gilbreath; sisters Yvonne Young and Gail Mason; brother Charles Mason (Reta); fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, at Avalos-Sanchez and Thomas Funeral Home in Midland, Texas, with a funeral service on February 15, 2025, at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery.
