Laura Lane Bush, born on November 4, 1946, in Midland, Texas, is recognized for her pivotal role as the First Lady of the United States from 2001 to 2009. Graduating from Southern Methodist University in 1968, she began her career as a second-grade teacher and later became a librarian after earning a master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin. Laura met her husband, George W. Bush, in 1977, and they married that same year. As the First Lady of Texas, she championed initiatives focused on health, education, and literacy. On the national stage, Laura continued her dedication to education, establishing the annual National Book Festival in 2001. A stalwart advocate for women’s causes, she engaged in The Heart Truth and Susan G. Komen for the Cure organizations. Despite personal tragedies and controversies, Laura Bush remains a symbol of commitment to public service and causes dear to her heart.
