On December 7, 1993, is born Natalie Anisha Hinds
Born in Midland, Texas, Natalie Anisha Hinds, an American professional swimmer, began her remarkable journey in the pool at an early age, mentored by her mother. Graduating from Midland High School and later earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Florida, Hinds took a break from swimming in 2016 before making a triumphant return in 2018. Her breakthrough came in 2020 at the age of 27, winning a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics. Notably, she secured the national title in the 100 meter freestyle at the 2022 US National Championships and played a vital role in relay events, amassing medals. With roots in Midland, Hinds continues to make waves in the world of swimming.
December 13, 1947: Birth of Marilyn Jean Buck in Midland.
Midland-born poet, activist, writer Marilyn Jean Buck (1947–2010), served time for her involvement in political actions. Despite her imprisonment, she contributed articles on social issues while writing and publishing poetry. Her work, recognized with a PEN American Center prize, reflects her dedication to activism and literary expression. Buck’s life, marked by activism against racial injustices and wars, culminated in her passing in 2010 after battling cancer, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and artistic fervor deeply rooted in her Midland upbringing.
