Horseshoe Arena officials in Midland County are denying allegations that they have misused money from taxpayers.
“We are using your money properly,” Horseshoe Hospitality Services President Joe Kelley told CBS7. “We’re a great economic asset to Midland County. We’re doing a good job managing the Horseshoe. We haven’t misused county funds. You can be comfortable with that.”
CBS7 reports the allegations stem from an audit covering October 2018 to September 2019. Midland County reportedly found that the arena provided illegal incentive payments to outside companies on multiple occasions.
“Close to $10 million was spent,” Midland County Judge Terry Johnson told CBS7. “The county received revenues of $775,000. It doesn’t take an accountant to figure out those numbers just don’t work.”
Horseshoe Hospital Services receives funding from the county to run the arena. The venue has hosted over 3,000 events since its 2006 opening, according to Horseshoe’s website.
