CITY OF BIG SPRING: 2020 Sealcoat Project

Roadwork

City of Big Spring issued the following announcement on July 2

Annually, the City of Big Spring completes a seal-coat project to extend the life of our City streets. It is estimated that a sealcoat application can extend the life of pavement from three to six years. Seal-coating is the application of asphalt emulsion followed immediately with an aggregate cover. Excess aggregate is then swept up a few days later. This year’s project is scheduled to begin July 6th, weather permitting.  The seal-coating process moves along quite rapidly so any delays in travel should be kept to a minimum.

Motorists should prepare for delays near active work zones. Reduce speed, stay alert and obey all signage and traffic control. Signage and traffic control will be in place at each location as work progresses. Motorists should never try to enter or cross a lane where crews are placing seal-coat until the roadway is reopened.  Your street access may be limited during the asphalt emulsion application until the aggregate cover is applied. After the street is open to traffic, please use extreme caution when stopping, starting, or backing out of your driveway. Turning the steering wheel while stopped will cause damage to the new surface during its curing stage.

The City of Big Spring’s annual Seal Coat Program will begin on Monday, July 6, 2020.  Click the link below to view maps indicating the streets that will be included in this year’s project.

The public is asked to remove vehicles from specified roadways.  Vehicles will only need to be removed from the street during the time crews are working.  There will be an attempt to make contact with vehicle owners to move their vehicles by knocking on doors prior to work beginning. The towing of vehicles will only be done as a last resort.  During the project, the parking of vehicles on the sidewalk and/or yard will be permitted, but vehicles should be removed as soon as work is completed in the area.  Check the City Facebook page as we will use it to keep citizens updated on the project as well as the location of work crews as work progresses.

The City of Big Spring regrets any inconvenience related to the seal coating program and request the public’s patience during the project. If you have any questions, please call 432-264-2501.
