Gaines County schools enrolled 2,230 students who identified as economically disadvantaged in the state during the 2022-23 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 3,673 students enrolled in Gaines County schools, 60.7% were considered economically disadvantaged. This is a 4.8% increase over the previous school year.

Gaines County enrolled the 116th highest number of students identified as economically disadvantaged among Texas counties.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they're offering better education for more Texas students.
