Born on July 13, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, Anthony Jerome "Spud" Webb emerged from humble beginnings. Nicknamed "Spud" for his round head resembling the Sputnik satellite, Webb faced skepticism about his height but defied expectations. Raised in a small home, he found inspiration in basketball. Webb's journey unfolded at Midland College, where he led the Chaparrals to a national title in 1982. His success continued at North Carolina State University before entering the NBA in 1985. Notably, Webb, standing at 5 ft 6 in, triumphed in the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, securing his legacy. Webb's career spanned from 1985 to 1998, encompassing teams like the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings. Post-retirement, he played a pivotal role as the president of basketball operations for the Texas Legends, contributing to the NBA G League's growth. Webb's impact extends beyond his height, leaving an enduring mark on basketball history.
