Marilyn Jean Buck, born in Midland, Texas, on December 13, 1947, died on August 3, 2010, succumbing to uterine cancer. Raised in a family ardently supporting civil rights, her father's stand against segregation left an indelible mark on her early life. Amidst activism against the Vietnam War and involvement in the New Afrikan Independence Movement, she faced imprisonment for aiding Assata Shakur's escape and the infamous 1981 Brink's robbery. Buck, sentenced to 80 years, wrote prolifically from federal prison. After a tumultuous life marked by bombings, convictions, and releases, she passed away at 62, just weeks post her release. Marilyn Jean Buck's connection to Midland lingered in the roots of her fervent family activism.
