Congressman August Pfluger of Texas has issued a statement following the release of a declassified CIA analysis that supports the theory that COVID-19 originated from a lab leak. Pfluger expressed his view that "for over four years now, the complete truth about COVID-19 and its origins has been hidden from the American people." He criticized previous administrations for not providing transparency regarding the virus's origins.
Pfluger credited former President Trump and newly appointed CIA Director John Ratcliffe for declassifying the information. "Under his leadership, newly appointed CIA Director John Ratcliffe has taken swift action, declassifying the CIA analysis of the virus, which lo and behold, favors the lab leak theory," he stated. He also pointed out what he sees as an irony in people being labeled conspiracy theorists for supporting this theory in the past.
Reflecting on the impact of COVID-19, Pfluger said, "The COVID-19 pandemic ended lives, closed businesses, destroyed livelihoods, devastated our economy, and robbed families of years that could have been spent together." He praised Ratcliffe's decision to release this information as a step toward preventing future pandemics.
Pfluger has been vocal about seeking transparency regarding COVID-19's origins. In 2022, he commended a report by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence concerning these origins. In March 2023, he supported legislation requiring intelligence agencies to disclose related information. Later in 2023, he called on President Biden to release all intelligence connected to COVID-19 and proposed holding NIH accountable for oversight failures at EcoHealth Alliance’s research at Wuhan Institute of Virology.
